Emily Foltz is a second year medical student at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. For the next year, she is engaging with Blackstone Bicycle Works, a youth education program of Experimental Station, where youth ages 8-18 not only learn to run a business building and repairing bikes, but develop a strong work ethic, earn increasing levels of responsibility and gain another place to call home. She will work closely with program staff and participants to develop a holistic approach to academic support for Blackstone Bicycle Works. This holistic model will incorporate academic and lifestyle choices such as good sleep, study, and dietary habits as well as develop personal strategies for youth to stay organized, reduce stress and navigate social challenges. She is seeking to raise $2,500 to provide program youth with basic school supplies, stock the homework room with a wide range helpful resources, support monthly career exploration field trips within Chicago, and provide youth with nutritious daily snacks as well as ingredients for Saturday cooking lessons in which youth will prepare meals for each other weekly.

ABOUT Schweitzer Fellows Fest 2016

The Schweitzer Fellowship is a year-long service learning program for graduate students in health-related professions who will design and implement innovative direct service projects aimed at improving the health and well-being of underserved Chicago area communities. Through their community projects and participation in a year-long program that includes mentoring support, monthly meetings, written reflection, and interprofessional collaboration, Schweitzer Fellows are developing the skills and confidence needed to become Leaders in Service—professionals who will remain dedicated to public service and to creating change.

In the summer of 2016, the Schweitzer Fellows for Life network launched FellowsFest 2016 (formerly Summer Fest), a campaign to help support our current Fellows' projects. Each of the Fellows has created a "wish list" of supplies and resources that will help them realize their service project goals.

The Chicago Areas Schweitzer Fellowship is a program of Health & Medicine Policy Research Group. Your Summer Fest donation will appear on your credit card statement at "Health & Medicine."
